Gore Gore Girls - Get The Gore

There was a time in my teens when I was completely closed minded about music. Basically, if it didn't rock, I didn't like it. I've grown since then, and although my tastes are still very selective, I honestly enjoy music in just about every genre. But my love for good old fashioned rock 'n roll is still very much deeply ingrained. In the spirit of bands like The Runaways, Suzi Quatro and, more recently, The Detroit Cobras, we have Detroit's Gore Gore Girls. Their latest album "Get The Gore" does not offer much in the way of surprises, but that doesn't mean that it isn't a sandbox full of rock 'n roll fun. This is the triple G's 10th year of existence and songs like "Fox In A Box," "Loaded Heart," and "Little Baby" rock it in a way that picks you up and transports you back to a delightfully cheesy 60's B-movie (which for me is a good thing.) I thoroughly enjoy all of the 60's girl group inspired bands out there at the moment (The Pipettes, etc) but every once in a while, I just want to rock. And this is the band that does it for me.

Sky Parade

I’ve recently stumbled across an amazing band that delivers the most captivating psychedelic 60’s-style rock that I’ve heard in a long time. They’re called Sky Parade and I don’t believe that there is any possible way to dislike this band. Lead vocalist Tommy Dietrick was also in Brian Jonestown Massacre and it’s definitely in a similar vein of high energy retro rock ‘n roll revivalism. I don’t yet have their new album “Love Is Forever” but from what I’ve heard, this is a band that could certainly develop into being one of my favourites. Just sampling the songs they have posted on their myspace page sets me in a “my mind is blown” state of mind. You’ve got to hear the song “Free My Love” which is a must for fans of the aforementioned BJM as well as Stone Roses, Love and Rockets or The Verve. Apparently, their first album “Fire In The Sky” was relatively successful for an indie release. After hearing what I’ve heard recently, it’s unfortunate that I didn’t get to know this band sooner but I’m looking forward to hearing them even more in the future.
