Dog Day - Night Group

Dog Day are an excellent jangle pop band out of Halifax, Nova Scotia, who's latest full-length ("Night Group") I have been rapidly digesting over the last week or so. Like many of the Nova Scotian bands of the mid 90's, Dog Day's got a knack for catchy, hooky guitar based pop that should be number one on every chart, but for some reason, in this bizarro world that we live, isn't. At first listen, you might hear a pinch of the many Death Cabbies that drive by indietown, but as each song passes, their many facets and layers become more apparent. Adding a somewhat original element to Seth Smith's more than capable vocals is the vocal accompaniment of bassist Nancy Urich. Some of the songs, like 'Vow' for example, even ventures into a slight Sonic Youth area. 'Sleeping, Waiting' reminds me of every party I attended from 1989 to 1994, with it's nostalgic "Boys Don't Cry" like beat to its college rock vibe. You'll likely also hear hints of The Smiths, (early) Sloan, Eric's Trip and Thrush Hermit. Basically, 'Night Group' is such an enjoyable listen from start to finish, that it's 12 cuts are over before you know it. They've embarked on a cross Canada tour that will surely garner them quite a bit of buzz over the months to come, and that buzz will be rightfully deserved. Highly recommended.

Dog Day will be at The Horseshoe on March 6th and at The Rivoli on March 8th, both as part of Canadian Music Week. Don't miss it.
