The Dreaded Love Lyric

There is nothing I hate more than the dreaded and ever-painful love lyric. Many people unfortunately equate that with hating love. But that couldn't be further from the truth. As a matter of fact, I love love. I've been madly in love with the same woman for over 10 years. However, the love lyric has been giving people a warped idea of what love truly is for way too long. It has to stop. The love lyric is destroying marriages, causing families to break down, and preventing many people from ever falling in love in the first place. How so?

Well, there are basically two types of love lyrics. There are happy lyrics about falling in love or being in love and there are sad lyrics about falling out of love and having your heart broken. Let's begin with happy love songs. Happy love songs will lead a person to believe that true love means that a person will set up house and home on the proverbial cloud nine for the rest of his life. Real love is depicted as something that requires no work and no effort, other than the initial chase to "get the guy or girl." Fireworks go off everytime you look in each other's eyes, and heart palpitations occur everytime you hold hands. The truth of the matter is that THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE AND UNREALISTIC! Yes, lyrics such as these are fairly accurate when making reference to a couple in the courting stage, but the truth of the matter is that when the real life sets in, true love requires a ton of work. It doesn't always feel marvelous; it doesn't come without its share of problems. How do you know if you're in love? You know because you've worked hard at it, and the two of you are still good friends (or best friends) after several years. Things are still romantic, but it's because you make time for romance. I don't believe in a soulmate. I don't believe that two people were just "meant to be together." I believe that two people stay in love because they've determined in their minds and hearts to work hard at staying in love and they truly work hard to care about each other's feelings. If that seems like too much work for you; than maybe love isn't your thing. Take up bowling instead.

The sad love lyric is much more accurate. Most break-up songs are pretty good at depicting how it feels to have your heart broken. That's why I generally respect the sad love lyric more. However, the reason for this is because too many people use the happy love lyric as their guideline to finding love. When the significant other fails to make a person consistently feel like their favourite song tells them that they should, they end up with feelings very similar to what their new favourite song is suggesting. That is why people consistently write these types of songs, and that is why these songs consistently reach the top of the charts.

Ultimately, I'll listen to anything if there's interesting music behind it, or it's got an undeniably catchy hook. To avoid the love lyric completely is pretty much impossible. But I decided a long time ago that I would not use the dreaded love lyric as my road map to the corner of eternal love and happiness. Hey, it seems to be working in our relationship.
