[UPDATE JANUARY 23rd, 2009]
I don't usually make a habit of updating articles that I've posted from this far back in history, but since the above indie music project link is no more, I thought that I'd simply repost the original article below, for archival purposes. Enjoy.
They're angsty, without being angry. They're sarcastic, without being arrogant. They create serious music that is still a lot of fun. they are Beautiful Nothing.
Ever since recording their first CD with the $1000 they were awarded from a FACTOR grant, they've been creating quite a buzz in their hometown of Burlington, Ontario. When I first saw them perform at the Sound of Music teen band competition a few years back, I was immediately struck by their originality and their ability to stand out. I still refer to that particular competition as 5 Weezer's and 1 Beautiful Nothing. They create their own sound and their own mood.
Since then, their song Sordinaire has made quite an impression on garageband.com, receiving a significant amount of good reviews and downloads. And the recent release of their full-length, "Find Yourself Lost" has garnered them even more attention. Just listen to the song Holding On, particularly the passion in lead singer Anthony Ludgate's voice as he sings, "Gripping tight, aboard this flight/ jerked around from side to side/ A crash course that's on a very slow decline!" You know he means it. And the almost creepy feel of the opening few notes of In July, leading nicely to his admission of it having "been so long since I knew right from wrong or I've belonged."
Yes, it's apparent that the members of Beautiful Nothing have done a lot of soul-searching by means of their music. They also hope that their music provokes the listener to do the same.
