Anti-Hero

Anti-Hero is another band from London, Ontario which is an area that I'm beginning to think has as cool a music scene as Toronto or Hamilton (The Weekend and The Joys are another couple of bands that I really like from that area.) They follow a tradition of heavy female-fronted rock 'n roll started by artists like Heart, and followed up by the likes of Joan Jett and Biff Naked. I don't usually make a habit of updating articles that I've posted from this far back in history, but since the above indie music project link is no more, I thought that I'd simply repost the original article below, for archival purposes. Enjoy.

Every decade seems to have its own interpretation of what is considered cool in female fronted rock 'n roll! The 60's gave us the blue-eyed soul of Janis Joplin. The 70's saw the Zeppelin-tinged Wilson sisters in Heart rise to fame. The 80's gave us the Bad Reputation of Joan Jett; and the grungy (and drunken) antics of Courtney Love and Hole made the 90's her decade to reign as rock 'n roll queen. Enter the new millennium, and enter Rose Perry and Nic Vanhaverbeke of Anti-Hero!

Incorporating the best parts of all the aforementioned artists, Anti-Hero bring back everything we love about rock 'n roll - The attitude, the sincerity, the hooks and the in-your-face desire to be heard make this a band that is impossible to ignore. Rose's background in opera and classical music help to give their music and lyrics a maturity that isn't always represented in rock. Another thing that makes their sound unique is the contrast between Rose's flawless professionally trained singing voice, and Nic's 'scream at the top of your lungs' vocal harmonies. That, along with Jesse Tomes' crunchy guitar stylings, make Anti-Hero the ultimate sound for true rock lovers today.

The band has been described as the 21st century's answer to Nirvana. But that description would only pigeonhole them as a return to the grunge sound of the 90's. Not true. Grunge was all about the angst that comes with being treated as the underdog. It was all about dealing with the situation. Anti-Hero's passionate lyrics evoke the image of one who may be treated as such, but who refuses to take things sitting down. Just listen to the songs Not Good Enough, Two Words, the first single Unpretty and my personal favorite Wake Me Up, and there is no doubt that these girls can dish it out twice as hard as they may be required to take it. And this attitude is not only reflected in their music but in their work ethic as well. They are 100% committed to making this band a success. In the words of Rose Perry, 'We aren't going to stop until we are heard. We aren't just another rock band - we've got a message, we speak out for what we believe in, and we want to make a change.' Believe me, we're listening.
