The Mystery Jets - Making Dens

For many an adolescent rock 'n roller, having your parents approval for your musical tastes, is not only uncool, but it's oftentimes enough to make you reconsider your tastes altogether. This however, is not the case when it comes to Twickenham, London's Mystery Jets. Lead vocalist Blaine Harrison not only has his father Henry's approval, but he's allowed him to be an active part of the band, along with Will Rees (guitar/vocals), Kai Fish (bass/vocals) and Kapil Trivedi (drums/vocals). Actually, "allowing" him to be in the band is hardly the proper expression to use when referring to Henry's role. He and his son started jamming together when Blaine was still very young and he remains their chief lyricist today. With the onslaught of bands in recent years using the 60's and 70's as merely their inspiration, Mystery Jets have the distinct privilege of having a bandmate who was an active part of the music of those era's. And those influences are certainly present. From the prog-rock sounds of "Zootime" and the title track, to the classic brit-pop of "You Can't Fool Me Dennis", and the slightly new-wavy "The Boy Who Ran Away", you would be hard-pressed to find a prog, brit-pop or new wave band that they actually sound like. Yes, their sound is completely original and although Blaine's vocals remind this listener slightly of Syd Barrett, the music is so fresh that any comparisons can only be used merely as a reference to reel you in. And if you're unfamiliar with Mystery Jets, I hope these references have done just that.
