In-Flight Safety - The Coast Is Clear

In-Flight Safety gets compared to Coldplay in just about every article that is written about them. The fact that they play the same kind of atmospheric, stadium rock doesn't help. And the fact that vocalist John Mullane's voice sounds eerily similar to Chris Martin's certainly doesn't help either. But trust me, save the $100+ you'll be spending to squint and see Coldplay in a stadium, and dish out the $20- to see In-Flight Safety at a smaller venue. I saw these guys perform last month at The Horsehoe on a bill with Raising The Fawn and Apostle Of Hustle, and the sound was absolutely intense. Mullane's voice may rightfully draw comparisons to Mr. Martin's but more accurately it's Chris if he swallowed a cup of gravel. He has that slight edge that Coldplay is in dire need of these days. The new album, The Coast Is Clear, has a few really great tracks, most notably the first single "Surround", which has that majestic, clouds parting, heavens opening up kind of feel that consistently sends shivers down the old spine. If there is one criticism, it's that the songs start to sound the same after awhile which may change after a few more listens. Thankfully, Mullane is not interested in sticking to a formula but he has a desire to add a producer to the next album that he would like to be "more ambitious." And as long as a band keeps striving to set the bar higher with every album, we can only imagine how great this band will sound next time around.
