CONTEST!!!: Win tix to the Modernboys Moderngirls CD Release Show and a copy of their latest CD

CD Review: Modernboys Moderngirls - I Might As Well Break It

Bands will often rely on certain tactics to get a music lover on his or her feet. One of the most popular methods is to make your head bob with a catchy melody and an infectious hook. Another tried and true technique is to blast you in the face with some high octane rock 'n roll! Oftentimes a band will go with one or the other. Modernboys Moderngirls take the all encompassing route by incorporating elements of both, creating a sound that is as steeped in a late 60's garage sound as much as it borrows from the playfulness of soul music's golden era in Motown. Borrowing from the past in such a way enables the band to create a sound that is new and fresh, yet easy to absorb.

The album opens with the new wave rhythms of Missmybabygirl, where the gruff lead vocals of Akira Alemany acts as a cool contrast with the well produced instrumentation and professional sounding backing harmonies. When the groove of that song is followed by the Detroit rock blast of Stay Under, it becomes obvious that settling for one specific style is not a path that this band is comfortable taking, which really works in their favour. The fact is, that the band shows just enough variety to keep things interesting, while still managing to keep within certain boundaries that allows them to establish a sound of their own. There's the British Invasion pop of songs like My Baby Says Boy, Don't You Ever Go and Happily Unsteady, the piano melodic soul of A Hammond Organ Singing, the 80's punk of I Don't Need To Understand and the prom night dancefloor din of songs like I Can't Hardly Stand and In Another Year. By the time you reach the classic rock of On The Line and the moody and atmospheric closer Spiral and Smoke, it's hard not to feel a little bit overwhelmed since the album accomplishes an awful lot in its 30 minute time span. After taking a few minutes to catch your breath, however, you'll likely be taking it for another spin, since the album may be fast and furious, but it's also very addictive.
