The Receiver - Decades

Casey and Jesse Cooper are multi-instrumentalists who apparently have grown discontent with the singer-songwriter pigeonhole that many other artists choose to burrow themselves into. Although they’ve never mentioned that to me personally, one listen to their music suggests that they take their craft very seriously. Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, together they form the magnificence that is The Receiver. The new CD “Decades” is steeped in atmosphere, creating a warm mood that is at once bewildering yet completely accessible. They seem equally influenced by the singer-songwriter types such as Elliott Smith and Kings of Convenience; while also obviously being schooled in the ambience of Air and Sigur Ros. The song “In Tunnels” has a melody that is impossible to get out of your head, with some of the most interesting keyboarding I’ve heard in years. The vocals are admirably soothing, which helps to relieve any possible pretention that would normally emerge from an artist of this caliber. “Prodigal” is another brilliant track. It’s begins very mellow, seducing you with a slightly haunting melody before concluding with a very impressive instrumental conclusion, made all the more powerful by Jesse’s immediate style of drumming. Overall, they provide something for everyone. So please, buy the CD, take it home, put it in your CD player, turn the lights off, shut your eyes, and let the Cooper brothers take you away for the next 51.4 minutes.
