TV On The Radio: Return To Cookie Mountain

TV On The Radio have done it again. 2004's Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes CD made quite an impression with it's "never heard before in indie rock" soulful sound. Now they're back with "Return To Cookie Mountain", a significant step-up for a band that is nearly impossible to categorize. Their sound could be classified as avant-garde, but the melodies are far too strong to be put in that category. The songs are epic in feel and content, if not necessarily in length. The album does have its 7 and 8 minute masterpieces, but a song like "Province" is the most epic-sounding cut of the bunch, and it clocks in at under 5 minutes. Also, at a time when R&B songs are composed of all R and no B, "Blues From Down Here" is possibly more R&B than anything climbing the charts these days. The vocals will pierce your very being, and you'll be completely reeled in by the rhythm of a song such as "Wolf Like Me". All in all this is another solid release by the indie-rock kings of romantic doo-wop trip-hop.
